Copper Naphthenate

Copper is not used as a drier due to its low activity and green color. Copper naphthenate is basically used as an anti fouling agent, rot proofing agent and preservative. In textiles it offers good protection mildew, fungi and dry rot. It protects timber and tent cloth from beetles, termites and white ants.
It is used in marine paints as an anti-fouling agent as it hydrolyses to produce copper hydroxide and naphthenic acid. Both these substances prevent fouling by organisms such as barnacles and sea weed.
Copper naphthenate offers an advantage over phenolic type preservatives as it does not retard the drying of the subsequent paint films and is free from bleeding tendency. It does not cause corrosion of metal parts coming in contact with wood where it is used as a preservative. It is normally applied in solution and emulsified forms.
