PATSTAB
1001 is a novel, antimony mercaptide stabilizer system for rigid
pipes and pipe fittings applications.
Optimum
results are obtained when used in twin screw extrusion of
pipes as well as injection moulded pipe fittings.
The
advantage of using PATSTAB 1001 is the low phr levels as compared
to leads and tin stabilizers. Best results are obtained when
used with calcium stearate due to the exceptional synergy of
the two materials. In comparison with lead stabilizers, PATSTAB
1001 gives much greater heat stability when incorporated with
calcium stearate. The synergism of PATSTAB 1001 extends well
beyond calcium stearate to all alkali and alkaline earth metal
salts of organic acids.
PATSTAB
1001 does not have good U.V. resistance, but the U.V. resistance
is well improved with increased dosage of titanium dioxide
in the formulation. Also the sulphur staining is much less
than lead based stabilizers.
At
low temperatures PATSTAB 1001 performs very well as compared
to methyl and butyl tin as well as lead based stabilizers.
Notes on Formulation:
At a typical stabilizer level of 0.5 phr, the addition
of 1.0 phr calcium stearate doubles the heat stability.
At typical stabilizer level of 0.5 phr, the addition of 1.0
phr titanium dioxide remarkably improves the U.V. stability,
which is comparable with that of tin stabilizers.
Dosage Level:
PATSTAB 1001 offers the best economies in low phr applications.
The usual addition level is 0.5 to 1.0 phr.
Titanium dioxide:
In applications where U.V. stability is a consideration, adequate
TiO2 level will assure resistance to degradation. Under ordinary
circumstances the amount used in PVC pipe formulation is sufficient.
Cross- staining:
There is a possibility of cross staining when regrinds of PVC
material with organotin stabilizers containing sulphide sulphur
is mixed with the compound with PATSTAB 1001 stabilizer. This
is to be avoided.
Calcium Stearate:
Compound with calcium stearate to get the best performance from
PATSTAB 1001.
It
is observed that properly compounded PATSTAB 1001 stabilizer
systems are the best choice for twin and multi-screw pipe extrusion.
